Does buying DEMO rims make sense?

2023-06-16

DEMO rims are a topic that heats up numerous online discussions on automotive forums and practically everyone has their own opinion on the subject.

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of DEMO rims. This will allow you to decide for yourself whether such a product is worth considering and whether its installation is completely safe and cost-effective. Purchasing rims is crucial for the safety of your vehicle. Remember that DEMO rims, like any other rims, are primarily a matter of comfort and roadworthiness, and only then aesthetics – something that, unfortunately, many people approach in reverse order or completely ignore aspects related to driving quality and safety.

What are DEMO rims and why are they available on the market?

DEMO rims are simply rims removed from various vehicles, used to showcase both the attractive wheels and the overall appearance of the vehicle in that configuration. This means they were mounted, but most often they haven't driven any distance, or only a few or several dozen kilometers. This should, of course, be clearly stated in the description of the given set of rims. DEMO rims are most often used in situations such as:

  • Manufacturer's showroom – cars with more expensive rims look much better, but they're often sold in cheaper versions, or the buyer requested a completely different design. This could be the reason for a large number of rims that have seen minimal use. Perhaps some have never left the showroom;
  • Factory testing – after production, cars undergo various tests on the factory track to ensure everything works as it should. If the car is later customized to a specific customer's order, this may include changing the rims to different ones;
  • Assembly for transport by tow truck (truck, train) – cars must have their own wheels for transport so they can be driven or pulled onto tow trucks and then placed in the showroom or parked. Again, it's possible that they were replaced later, leaving behind a minimally used set.

Advantages of buying DEMO rims

The main advantages of DEMO rims are quite obvious, and by ordering them, you can get great products at an attractive price. These can be original rims for Toyotas or any other car brand, although mainly the most popular and visible ones on our roads.

Lower price

Because demo rims are essentially used rims, the price of demo rims can be significantly lower than a brand-new set that has never been mounted on a vehicle. This is often a great opportunity if you find the model you're interested in. The price reduction can vary greatly, from a few to even several dozen percent, depending on the condition and popularity of the given rim type. Typically, it's a dozen or so percent, which is worth considering, especially with more expensive models.

Relatively low mileage

Another advantage of DEMO rims is their minimal mileage. This is, of course, the rule, but there may be situations where the mileage is higher or the rims were driven in rather harsh conditions. This very precise information should be provided for each set of rims. The rims could only have been sitting in a showroom with a mileage measured in a few meters, or they could have been used for various road tests.

Disadvantages of purchasing DEMO rims

Buying demo rims also has its drawbacks. There are several, and each has its own consequences. It's important to understand them beforehand, knowing which ones you can avoid and which ones you should simply treat as a risk, perhaps worth taking if the price is attractive enough.

Possible damage and traces of use

The main drawbacks of DEMO rims are the potential for signs of use and minor damage. That's why you should always ask for good photos of the set you're purchasing, or visit and see it in person if you can.

Limited selection

The second significant drawback of demo rims is the limited selection. If you're looking for a specific model, you might not find it for a long time. Shops offering new aluminum rims often have a wide selection readily available – there are a lot of them on the market, even in rarer sizes. Therefore, buying demo rims can be quite time-consuming, requiring waiting for a bargain and analyzing whether the advantages of demo rims outweigh the disadvantages and make the purchase worthwhile. The same applies to the availability of perhaps less impressive, but cheaper and equally good rims, such as steel rims .

No manufacturer warranty

It's crucial that you thoroughly inspect the condition of DEMO rims before purchasing them. As used items, they are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty, meaning that returns or exchanges are not possible if any, even very serious, defects are discovered. Unfortunately, especially with aluminum rims, there is a possibility of internal damage invisible to the naked eye. Various minor defects can also significantly impede proper wheel balancing, which you'll only discover after they're installed at a balancing facility.

Any tire or rim replacement shop should perform this. It's something many people forget about when replacing tires or rims themselves. It's not a very complicated task, so you can do it yourself with very good results. However, balancing or optimizing your car isn't something you can do yourself. Larger or smaller imbalances in weight distribution always occur. This can, especially at higher speeds, lead to accelerated wear of bearings, suspension components, and the steering system. A greater imbalance will also be felt by the driver and passengers, significantly impacting their comfort.

Is it worth buying DEMO rims?

This question has only one answer: If you find the right size for your car and a model you like in good condition, then yes, of course. When viewing the DEMO rims you're interested in, be sure to check all the same parameters as when purchasing new rims, namely:

  • rim width;
  • rim diameter;
  • ET rim mounting;
  • number of holes;
  • hole spacing;
  • collar profile.

In addition, the mileage and production date provided by the seller should also be taken into account. Carefully assess their visual condition using photos or, if possible, by inspecting them. However, if you don't have time to browse through numerous offers or wait for something interesting to appear on the market, it's much easier to take advantage of the offers you'll find in new rim stores. For example, you might find original Audi rims available in a wide range of versions and designs, or original Opel rims with an equally wide selection. This option is definitely simpler, safer, and guarantees you'll receive the highest quality product. In a store, you receive a manufacturer's warranty, while the quality of demo rims and any defects can be very difficult to assess, even for experienced users.

Also, remember to use reputable rim and tire stores. Unfortunately, there are still dishonest sellers who offer rims of questionable quality or hide part of the price in very high shipping costs. It's worth checking reviews of a given store before making a purchase. This is the best guarantee that you're using reputable suppliers that have already been reviewed and satisfied.
