Steel rim production process.

2016-06-30

Vehicle wheels are a key element ensuring safety and driving comfort for all travelers. Due to the visual aspects, drivers most often choose aluminum rims for their cars. However, with the onset of winter, the nibs return to favor, mainly due to the fear of damaging their nicer and more expensive counterparts. However, the lower price does not mean that the production of such rims is simple.

The process of making steel rims is very complex and multi-stage. Skipping the rim design stage, the production process begins with the delivery of steel to the rim factory in the form of large rolls. The first step is to cut off the appropriate length of the steel sheet and straighten it in a special press. Then the selected piece of metal is carefully checked and ground to remove all burrs and other surface imperfections. The next stage is bending the prepared element into a circle and welding its ends using a special machine. While the joint is still hot, the excess adhesive is removed from both sides of the rim. Subsequently, the steel sleeve is subjected to the processes of pressing and rolling, during which characteristic humps are formed along the entire width of the rim, and the edge supporting the tire.

At the same time, at another station, the rim disc is formed from a steel disc. The first press on the production line extrudes the center cavity and marks the holes for the mounting pins. Another press creates a central hole as well as small windows that are used to cool the brake discs of the vehicle. Finally, the metal disc is given a convex shape, which further increases its stiffness and also allows the brake kit to fit in it.

The front surface of a steel rim prepared in this way is placed in a heated rim, and then both elements are welded or twisted depending on the size of the wheel. The last step is to paint the rim and, in some cases, to install the fan with a special sealant.
