Aluminum or steel rims? What to choose for winter?

2014-10-25

There is still a myth in Poland that in winter you only ride on steel rims because they are more resistant and durable. Nothing could be more wrong. Aluminum rims are just as good, and often better in winter than steel rims, because they are more resistant to dynamic impact than steel rims . They have a much lower weight, which results in lower fuel consumption and slower wear of the suspension components. They also improve the cooling of the brake system components, increasing its efficiency and performance. The question is, what rims to choose?

There are several factors that we should pay attention to, the first one is of course our budget. The purchase price of steel rims is only not much lower, taking into account the necessity to buy additional accessories needed to mount nibs, such as shorter pins or hubcaps, which often cost up to PLN 400, the difference in price becomes small. Steel 15 '' rims cost between PLN 120-170 per piece. 16 '' steel rims from 140, even up to 250 PLN. Aluminum rims in 15 '' cost about PLN 250 per piece, while 16 '' aluminum rims from PLN 300. When we choose a nice pattern with straight arms, it will be easy to keep them clean and in good technical condition. Contrary to appearances, nibs corrode faster than allus .

In short, the choice of rims for the winter is an individual decision of each of us, both types have advantages and disadvantages. Both types are suitable for use in winter conditions, with the exception of polished and chrome-plated aluminum rims.
Polished and chrome alloy wheels do not tolerate contact with salt, they are less resistant to chemicals used for cleaning bituminous surfaces. LadneFelgi.pl recommends rims with a uniform finish, type SILVER? SI? SILVER, which is resistant to all conditions.
